Twenty years of restraint, and it is only the beginning

Twenty years ago, watching server monitoring dashboards, anywhere, at any time, I was appalled by the energy drain imposed by mainstream technologies.

Scripts everywhere by default, interpreted languages, JVMs, layer upon layer of virtualisation, cheap hardware, runaway hypervisors. Few of us were saying it.

So we founded Grid System on this conviction: lean systems, efficient programs. Speed, yes, but with every bit of energy accounted for.

Today, our positions are starting to be shared. Not always for the right reasons: what people criticise AI for, they could have criticised past computing — and above all the web — for, more or less. The ratio is the same. Only the scale has changed radically.

Our convictions come out all the stronger:
